What’s the best song to sing during your 20-second hand-washing to avoid coronavirus?

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 3/6/2020

Long before the new coronavirus turned many people into obsessive hand washers, maybe you’d heard that a good hand-washing takes about as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday" twice. The old advice has even been incorporated into the Centers for Disease Control’s explanation of how to properly wash your hands.

But now that we’re all washing our hands 20 times a day, that birthday song is starting to get a little stale.

That’s probably why suggestions for other 20-second hand-washing songs have been popping up on Facebook and Twitter.

One list of alternatives includes classics like Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” and contemporary hits such as Lizzo’s “Good as Hell.”

Another offers hand-washing tips along with the suggestion that washers sing Rick Astley’s ’80s hit “Never Gonna Give You Up,” though we’re fairly certain that this is just the latest iteration of the classic Internet prank, rickrolling, in which one promises to deliver a shocking or amazing video but then links to the music video for that song.

The Vietnamese government has even gone so far as to create its own hand-washing song, which at least one Tweeter has identified as a “banger.”

Another recommends Prince’s “Little Red Corvette.”

Do you have a 20-second song snippet that would outdo these? Let us know by emailing or tweeting @Daniel_Sweeney. If we get enough recommendations, we might meme it up or even create a Spotify playlist in a subsequent story.
